Traditional Still Life Oil Painting Workshop
Postponed to November 19-22, 2021
Register now for this wonderful four day still-life oil painting opportunity with Susan Paterson, an award winning Canadian Master Artist who lives in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Susan paints both in oils and watercolor using traditional atelier methods. She has participated in many solo and group shows and has won numerous illustrious awards. She is a much sought-after teacher. In 2019, Susan won Second Place in the Art Renewals Centre's Still-Life category with her painting "Artist's Collection". This is an international online competition with some amazing talent from all over the world. A live exhibition of the award winning paintings was at the Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona, Spain in December and will be at Sotheby's in New York in July 2020.
Students will learn the traditional method of painting that she uses, with a careful drawing, underpainting, painting and glazing steps. To create an interesting composition, we will consider centres of interest, weight, value distribution, lighting, contrast and harmony . Students will set up their own still-life, using objects they've gathered themselves. (A limited assortment of fabrics, containers, vases, etc. will be available for use in the workshop.) Working directly from the set-up, students will carefully draw, transfer to a painting surface and paint - working from general (big shapes) to specific (details), learning about edges, colour mixing and how to create a 3-D illusion. Students, depending on their experience, may choose how complex their painting will be, from one favourite object to several, perhaps including glass or silver. There will be a demo each day showing the techniques used in each step, lots of time for painting with one-on-one help and critiques at the end of the day - discussing the day's breakthroughs, frustrations and progression.
